According to post in Mediate,http://www.mediaite.com/online/facebook-takes-on-haiti-relief/, $400,000 has been raised through Global Disaster Relief fan page on Facebook. This is a fraction of what has been raised through txt donations.
That's not to say that the page is a complete waste. "The fan page has gained over 146,500 fans and continues to add thousands a day." It's difficult to say what the value of this is but it certainly hasn't translated into dollars for the relief effort.

Too true!
There's too much noise on facebook. People are looking to give instantly.
In my personal experience, even though we had over 250 facebook members of our cause, and climbing, shock, surprise, the only donation we ever got was through someone that I knew personally.
Again, people fail to realize that fundraising means building relationships.
This means actually interacting in more than a superficial way on facebook.

for me facebook is not just for this thing.. yes you can gather more fans but i think there are sites that are more suitable for this.

i agree. the fans can be leveraged in other ways. but facebook hasn't shown that is can be an effective fundraising vehicle.

@mazarine - i'm glad that you concur. and you're absolutely. people don't feel compelled ot give to a cause that they are only peripherally connected to. There has to be a human connection. and while facebook is a manifestation of these connections it doesn't really create or nurture the relationships that lead to giving.
