Well Aware, a nonprofit in Austin, TX has come up with a variation on the a-thon fundraising model. In their "Shower Strike: campaign, they've asked people to form teams to raise raise $1000 to benefit Well Aware. Now here's the creative part - the fundraisers are not going to shower till they have reached their fundraising goal.
Shower Strike! Gross but well done.
Hopefully this works for Well Aware. To this point it has. It has garnered some PR hits and posts on blogs including this one. http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/charity/entries/2009/08/12/nonprofit_supporters_to_launch.html. These hits are valuable for a fledgling org.
Well Aware also shows that viral or pledge fundraising programs can come in any format, really. It just needs to resonate with your supporters.
Well Aware also has specific program goals that their fundraising objective is tied to. This is another essential component of an effective campaign.
Finally, Shower Strike costs virtually nothing to run.
Good job by Well Aware.
The takeaways for those looking for fundraising help
Well Aware is showing that:
- viral fundraising programs come in all shapes and sizes and are limited only by your creativity
- creativity gets in the news
- giving fundraisers and donors specific monetary and detailed program-related objectives for the campaign increases involvement by everyone
- viral or pledge fundraising program can cost virtually nothing to run.

We really appreciate the kudos!
